History of the Unity Movement
Founded more than 100 years ago by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, Unity is part of a uniquely American spiritual movement sometimes called New Thought. It combines a new understanding on the teachings of Jesus with universal spiritual principles--especially as expressed in the Transcendentalist writings of Emerson and Thoreau, among others.
Unity began as study groups and small prayer circles, grew into a publishing and educational ministry, and now includes more than 900 churches and groups worldwide. Its headquarters, Unity Village near Kansas City, Missouri, is home to the Unity Institute, which trains approximately 60 students every two years to be Unity ministers. Unity's publications such as Unity Magazine and Daily Word, and the prayer ministry Silent Unity also are housed at Unity Village.
