Poems Used by Rev. Sky St. John

Sky spoke on how the concepts of "good" and "evil" involve judgement and separation from God. Reminding us that in Genesis, God observes all that has been created as good, Sky challenged us to move beyond judgemental thinking toward recognizing the universal truth of the good in all things. Good in even the most mundane events, as Sky read:

Ironing
Gunilla Norris, from Being Home

The iron heats up. The board unfolds and
Stands like a free-form sculpture on the floor.
In the basket lies the wash,
Rolled and sprinkled.
Moisture hangs in the air,
A clean and steamy fragrance.

Soon the iron will hiss and glide,
Will flatten these shirts and give them a shape,
sharp creases, crisp collars, smooth cuffs.

My hand glides with the iron.
Under this heat the cloth begins to lie flat,
Pressed. To iron things out...
I think of how easily acts of management
can slide into power. In one instant of believing that I know best,
I can place myself outside of Your mercy.
The crease will be in the wrong place.
Help me to remember how You love
The crumpled as much as the smooth.
In You they are one.
These clothes will all be wrinkled again,
Like my life--crumpled and ordered
And crumpled again.

Make my hand light. Help me remember
You are the give of shapes
Whose mercy orders all things.

You Don't Have to Act Crazy Anymore
by Hafiz

You don't have to act crazy anymore---
We all know you were good at that.

Now retire, my dear,
From all that hard work you do

Of brining pain to your sweet eyes and heart.

Look in a clear mountain mirror--
See the Beautiful Ancient Warrior
And the Divine elements
You always carry inside

That infused this Universe with sacred Life
So long ago
And join you Eternally
With all Existence--with God!

Keeping Watch
by Hafiz

In the morning
When I began to wake,
It happened again--

That feeling
That you, Beloved,
Had stood over me all night
Keeping watch,

That feeling
That as soon as I began to stir

You put Your lips on my forehead
And lit a Holy lamp
Inside my heart.
